Digits

One of our elders, Jack, and I were talking a few months ago, he was telling me that he once he got a phone call from the pastor of a church in the small town where he was living. Apparently the pastor was just calling through the phone book determined to “reach out ant touch” every person in his community. Jack ended up visiting the church and he and his wife became involved.

The conversation lodged in my head so last summer I got my hands on a phone book, which, by the way, are not very easy to find these days. I started with the A’s and over the past few months I’ve called most of the folks on the first page. Now, let me be honest, most people will not give me the time of day… but I’ve been pleasantly surprised at the number of individuals who are not only willing to hear me out but are willing to tell me the struggles they are having.

So, with a few positive calls under my belt our church has decided to ramp things up a bit. Here’s a FAQ about what what we are doing.

What is Digits?

Digits is a twice a month meeting where members of Pillar Church get together at one of our homes in order to call the people of our community to invite them to service, see how we can pray for them and offer help for various needs

When does it happen?

Digits meets for an hour and a half the 2nd and 4th Monday of every month at the home of a church member. Calls will be made between the 7:15 and 8:00 pm.

Can I bring my children?

Sorry, no children please.

What are the host’s responsibilities?

Being a host for Digits is pretty easy. 1) You should have a home in the Dumfries/Triangle/Quantico area. 2) You should have a light snack and beverage available for the Digitizers. 3) It would be helpful if you had wireless internet access in your home 4) It would be best if you had a land line phone that you would allow the Digitizers to use. 5) It would be best if your home had enough space for the callers to spread out a bit so that it doesn’t sound like a call center in the background.

Who are we calling?

The phone numbers you will call are the home phone numbers of publicly listed individuals living in the Dumfries area. When you arrive a call list will be provided for you to work from.

Is this telemarketing?

No. No one likes telemarketers… the last thing we want to do is telemarketing. But that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t use our phones to call our neighbors and invite them to church. We are not selling or promoting any product and no one is getting paid to make these phone calls.

Is it safe to make calls from my phone? Most of the world has caller ID these days. If you call from your phone and do not block your out going caller ID the person receiving the phone call will be able to see your number. If this makes you uncomfortable you are welcome to use one of the extra phones.

Who’s phone will I use?

Preferably, your will use your own cell phone. For those who don’t wish to use their “minutes” or are concerned about security, several other phones will be available for your use.

What is the schedule for a Digits meeting?

  • 6:45-7:00 – Arrival & Setup
  • 7:00-7:15 – Phones Assigned, Call Lists Given, Best practices Q&A
  • 7:15-8:00 – Making Calls
  • 8:00-8:15 – Prayer for individuals we spoke with.
