Worldly men, Henry writes, “are apt to leave God out of their schemes.” They make plans and then set them into motion without the consultation of God. Proverbs reminds us “Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.” (Prov 21:19) Don’t allow your zeal to accomplish great things in the name of God cause you to forget that you lead a church that belongs to God. It is necessary for you to get in the habit of consulting God before setting any plan into motion. Most church planters are dreamers; easily intoxicated by notions that unexpectedly burst into consciousness. These bursts are easily mistaken for direction from the Holy Spirit so should be tested before they are acted upon. How many awful and ungodly plans have been blamed on God? Your burst of genius might just be indigestion. Test it before you act on it. If it stands the test of time, counsel and the concurrence of providence it will be clear with time.
